XML Business Document Exchange -- XIP-Excel

 
We expand the capability of Microsoft Excel to be an e-business tool. You do not need to know XML, just use your favorite tool.

Excel as front-end application

Our solution uses Microsoft Excel spreadsheets as the user interface where e-business document are created. 

These spreadsheets provide users interface to enable them to prepare and response to requests sent by their partners. Macro driven buttons are provided to enable user to view incoming XML document and response to these documents. Data from incoming documents are transfer to the new documents so that minimal data entry is required. The users can send this documents when they are ready. 

We are member of the XIP project team that defines the initial specification for the data exchange system. 

The screen shots of the system are shown below. On the left, The user prepare the purchase order using a Excel spreadsheet form and when the software generated a XML files before sending to the business partner.

Software package

Intrinix Implementation consists of the following key components:

  • A set of Microsoft Excel spreadsheet templates
  • A XIP compliant FTP transport modules - XIP Transporter
  • A associated set of Microsoft COM objects

Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet templates

It consists of a set of spreadsheets to translate the 8 document types defines in the XIP specification (Request for Comment status). 

These spreadsheets provide users interface to enable them to prepare and response to requests sent by their partners. Excel macros are used to convert Excel files to XML format and send via the Transporter to the respective partners.

The 7 Excel forms are provided to implement the 8 business documents proposed in the specification:

  • Request for quotation
  • Quotation
  • Purchase order
  • Purchase order acknowledge
  • Delivery order
  • Invoice
  • Receipt of delivery
  • Receipt of Payment

XIP Transporter

This module provides the FTP sending function to deliver the XML documents to their respective recipients as well as retrieval of XML documents from the respective FTP server. 

Microsoft COM

The entire software is implemented as software objects based on Microsoft Component Object Model (COM).

Minimum system configuration

This software requires the following configuration to execute to acceptable performance.

Computer System

  • Pentium - 133Mhz with at least 64Mb system RAM
  • At least 10 Mb of spare hard disk space
  • Internet connection either using LAN or Modem
  • Windows 98/XP or Windows 2000 operating system 
  • Microsoft Excel 2000 

XML Industrial Project

XIP stands for XML Industrial project, an initiative by XML Working group under ITSC Information Exchange Technical committee to implement a system to assist Singapore companies to evaluated XML as a tool for data exchange amongst themselves.
